Cornell

As I lay on the living room floor Friday racked with waves of nausea and abdominal cramping (stomach flu + another busted bracket) watching Cornell dismantle Temple, it was clear this team had serious talent. Can they beat Kentucky? If they can play KU to the wire in Lawrence, they can definitely beat Kentucky in upstate NY. And if they beat the best team left in the tourney, what's next? [editor's note: Cornell's last loss was 2/12...to, at the time, 3-15 Penn]

But they beat Fran Dunphy in the tourney. Are you seriously going to expect me to root for Fran Dunphy??? I mean ... wow.

I got no quarrel with Temple otherwise but ... Fran Dunphy?

Cornell is for real and has a better chance than UNI did -- in my opinion -- to knock off a 1 seed.

I'm finding it hard to root for Cornell, even though the "no athletic scholarships" argument is compelling. But, I mean, don't you Ivy Leaguers get enough glory already? Do you have to take over sports as well?

I don't know that we have a 'sports takeover' on our hands just yet.

The NYT tourney guys kept referring to the exciting mid-major teams left in the field (including Cornell). OK, 2 things -- (1) read NYT sports only for baseball (2) the Ivy League is not a mid major in basketball.

on another note, really cool New Yorker article this week about lacrosse. I think we gotta get over to the new stadium March 27 for a probable beatdown by Princeton

What exactly has Cornell taken over? Ever?

When Penn State turns out a Rhodes scholar, I'll root for them too.

Swear.

Don -- time to stock up on your Nittany Lion gear because they've had 2 Rhodes Scholars. Swear. (Yale 217, harvard INCLUDING radcliffe 323, Cornell 27)

I'm not sure whether you picked the Rhodes as the epitome of academic prowess, but of the four criteria for winning the award, one of them is 'energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for AND success in sports.' I highlight the AND b/c I'm pretty sure it was the success part that kept me from winning it.

Don - what size Happy Valley tee-shirt will you take? As an alum, I'm happy to support the school and order one for you.

I am not surprised at all that Penn State has had Rhodes Scholars. With a million students graduating every year, you have to figure a blind squirrel will find a nut on occasion.

But seriously, Penn State is a great school. I didn't mean to say it would never produce a Rhodes Scholar. I just mean I will pull for it as the state school underdog when it does.

In any event, I have no quarrel with the Nittany Lions. They were gracious losers in 2001 and 2002, when Yale beat them in basketball (by 13 and 16 points respectively), and Joe Paterno is truly a "college" football coach, which I admire greatly.

For a school that plays in a minor league semi-pro conference, it probably comes closest to playing college sports. So, send me whatever ever Penn State gear is available.

Now, if we were discussing Nebraska on the other hand....
