look what was happening in the 70s...

I heard this song on Sirius the other day and remember being creeped out by it as a 6 year old. Time has not blunted its creepiness. I'm guessing this was the peak of the quaalude era based on the glassy-eyed stares of the band members.

I have always wondered into which genre of music do we place this song? Classic Rock? Disco? Country? I guess pop? But I really don't know.

And creating a genre like "creepy" does not count.

Fair question, Don. I know the classic rock community wants nothing to do with this song and I would assume the same for the country crowd. I would say it's a disco ballad, designed to be played in between traditional disco sets while dancers are catching their collective breath, talking about their moves and not really paying attention to the creepy music.

I've often wondered why I have heard many people refer to this song as a country song and even heard it on country radio. It is country as much as any song by Air Supply or REO Speedwagon is country.

But your post has prompted me to delve into the mystery with the full weight and skill of a researcher trained by the Yale History Department.

So, according to Wikipedia, Exile re-established itself 5 years later as a country music band. A quick review of their country hits (sadly, yes, hits) reveals a substantial cache of the elevator-isnpired country ballads of the early 80s that I had blissfully forgotten from my youth.

Just like how someone wants you to taste the spoiled milk they just had, I prompt you to sample "Give Me One More Chance." Oh, and they re-released "Kiss You All Over" in their new country style just so everyone will know that Kentuckians can be creepy too.

With more than 35 members of the band over the years, Exile apparently was a scourge Hell-bent to kill all that was good with rock and country. Fortunately, I believe the night finally closed in on Exile.....

nice work, Don.

The sound of the countrified 'I want to kiss you all over' is less bizarre I would say. But then the *concept* of remaking a creepy song by guys who are 5 years older, and thus creepier, and the 5 years of guys putting that on mix tapes and going to their girlfriends' places with 4 paks of wine coolers makes the whole undertaking creepier than their original.

I sampled not only 'give me one more chance' but also 'i cant get close enough'...whoa...'elevator-inspired' might be an insult to muzak.
