Can I buy $138 pants? I already did and I was about to go return them but I thought I'd get some opinions. Banana Republic, slate, wool, flat front, that fit well. As I discussed with Julie and Melissa, it would be hard to bike to work in $138 pants so that should be reason enough not to get them. But it does rain, esp in the fall/winter....

I love a bargain and these were only 25% off. The cashier said "$170 ?! I didn't know we had pants that cost that much." That's probably not a good sign.

As most of you know, I wore the same second hand $12 Armani suit with a ? blood stain on the inside of the crotch for all my med school and residency interviews. That may be more my speed.

my take: if you spend a lot of money on clothes they should fit like a glove and you should feel like a million bucks when you put them on. if you're wearing them and all you see is the expensive price tag then i say ditch 'em for something more your speed (but lose the hobo stew shoes and anything with bloodstains).

Oh, Will, I was about to encourage you to keep the pants b/c you are so fiscally responsible and would probably keep them for a long time and $130 for a pair of good pants is actually not that bad...then I read your comment.

I still say keep the pants, though.

sounds like a case of the cheap guy (i mean, er, fiscally responsible guy) getting lured by a "good deal" to spend a wad of money, thereby undermining the very sensibilities that caused him to make the purchase the first place. kind of like another frugal friend i know who loves costco b/c of the prices, but ends up spending $250 things every trip on stuff he doesn't really need. is there a sniglet for this phenomenon?

Kath and Ted, you nail-on-the-head-hitters: i exchanged the dam pants b/c they were just too heavy. when it's 25 out the VA is 88 and when it's 106, the VA is 55 (your tax $ at work) so i had to get something lighter w/ the option of wearing long johns for the ride. yes, now you're all forced to think about me in long johns. but the replacement pants were $98 . did i buy just b/c of the deal? interesting question. i went there w/ the plan to get one pair of pants and ended up w/ three and two shirts. touche ted

I love when my socialist comrades are tortured by such decisions. Those are fair trade jeans, right? How many 12 year olds in a real banana republic did it take to make those? I have never spent more than $50 for jeans, so I don't know how to help......other than to say, go to Target, look like crap (i.e. me), and you'll never have this dilemma.

Don - I probably threw you off with the biking part but I don't wear jeans to work and I'm guessing you don't either. I have a pair of target jeans; the slick brand mossimo - Italian style for non-Italian prices. They have oddly deep pockets.
