Lieberman unleashed

wow ... that was something else. Was that the longest passive aggressive semi-rant in history or a guy speaking from the heart? (And is there a speaker from either party whose bottom teeth are more visible that Joe Lieberman's?) I can't help but think something terrible must've gone down behind the scenes with party leaders when Liebs lost the CT democratic senatorial primary in '06 to Ned what's his face. And...applause for Bill....?!?! The whole thing went bizarro-world for a moment. In the end, Joe's message didn't go very far: we need a leader who can cooperate, build consensus, etc. Sure, great, but you're still left with having to decide which side of the issues you want that consensus to be built around.

And props to Fred Thompson...if he had put as much effort into his campaign as he did that speech, his appearance at the convention may have been a little later in the week.

I think it was a little duplicitous for Joe Lieberman to continually refer to himself as a Democrat in this speech when he is now a registered Independent.

I thought Fred Thompson's speech was great. I teared up a little during the P.O.W. segment. That was truly a brutal ordeal for over 5 years. I thought he forced the red meat some (just not his forte).

I will remind you that the Connecticut Democrats basically booted him out of the party, because he supported the surge (that ultimately worked). Otherwise, he agrees with Dems on 95% of everything -- but that doesn't pass the liberal loyalty test. I am all out of smug, snarky comments about the Democrats faux tolerance. Oh wait, I just found one.

I do admire anyone who will risk his entire career for nothing else but principle. You guys may hate him, but he and I agree on what we think is the most important issue in the world. I am glad he is willing to risk it all to stand up for it.

Still, Joe's speech was odd, and even I was stifling laughter at the Clinton reference. Clinton stole our ideas and then made no effort to show that welfare reform and a balanced budge were bi-partisan initiatives. I think the crowd was as polite as it could be.

He also is just a bad speechgiver. He would have been better used in commercials in swing states, not in front of a convention crowd thirsty for more red meat.

I thought his "attacks" on Obama were overblown and weak. He said Obama will be a great leader, but just is not ready now. That is more praise than I would give him.

I think Obama will win, based on all the press I'm reading. And based on the empty seats at the RNC convention. And based on the unenthusiastic golf clapping in the audience last night.

The war was THE issue of that election and Joe didn't get the nomination because CT Dems didn't like his stance on it. Should we have nominated him out of loyalty anyway?

Fred Thompson did give a good speech. But, Will he is an ACTOR and needs scripted lines (like he had for the speech). When he had to think on this toes and try to answer questions in debates/interviews, he was AWFUL!!!

Lieberman's speech was very weird (and boring). I missed the explosiveness that was demonstrated by the previous Dem traitor who spoke at the Repub convention (Zell Miller...who challenged Chris Matthews to a duel he was so fiery mad).

Ron Paul and Chuck Hagel are still Republicans. Strong parties and string countries can withstand dissent.

Joe decided of his own free will to run as an independent when he didn't get the nomination. The notion that democrats should've voted for him b/c he's a democrat makes about as much sense as saying he should have voted against the surge b/c he's a democrat. I voted for him in the primary by the way b/c I didn't like Lamont.
